Bio-Rad QX200 ddPCR

Dec. 15, 2022

The MCIC acquired the Bio-Rad QX200 Droplet Digital PCR system.

Digital PCR (dPCR) is quickly becoming the go-to complementary technology to the traditional real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR). Both, qPCR and dPCR provide sensitive and robust detection and quantitation of nucleic acids using fluorescence, and each one of these methods has distinct advantage. ......

New low cost high throughput sequencing services

Nov. 19, 2020

We now offer a low cost high throughput (HT) genomic DNA library preparation protocol ideal for lowpass whole genome sequencing for genotyping purposes, whole small genomes sequencing, scRNA-seq, metagome and microbial sequencing. The Seqwell plexWell technology protocol employs transposase fragmentation and barecode tagging of the genomic DNA and produces a balanced, normalized pool of libraries. ........

The MCIC is pleased to welcome Dr. Jelmer Poelstra

June 19, 2020

The MCIC  is pleased to welcome Dr. Jelmer Poelstra, who will lead the bioinformatics activities at the MCIC Computational Biology Laboratory (MCBL). Dr. Poelstra has a solid knowledge in bioinformatics and computational tools for  genomic analyses, as he has been working with high throughput sequencing data for the past nine years. His disciplinary background is in population genetics. .......

The MCIC is welcoming Khwannarin Khemsom

June 19, 2020

We are welcoming Khwannarin Khemsom our new microscopy research associate. Khwannarin (Biu) Khemsom graduated from Kasetsart University in Thailand majoring in Biology, earned a Master’s degree in Biotechnology and then worked as research assistant at the Center of Emerging Bacterial Infections, at the Mahidol University in Thailand. During her employment she gained experience in microbiology, molecular biology and microscopy. She was also involved in mentoring and training incoming students.

New SEM at the MCIC

Nov. 12, 2019

Our new Hitachi Schottky field emission SU5000 scanning electron microscope provides high quality nano-scale images for research in biology and material sciences. The Schottky electron source and detectors give optimal imaging and analytical data, and the novel hex technology allows for high brightness imaging also at low accelerating voltage settings.

CGIAR Borlaug awarded to the MCIC

July 16, 2018

The MCIC was awarded a CGIAR Borlaug fellowship to host and provide training to Myriam Izzarra from the International Potato Center (CIP), in Lima Peru. The aim of her project was to characterize the genetic variation in P. infestans populations from different Peruvian regions/environments and potato hosts using high trhroughput sequencing methodologies.

  2. CFAES Launches New Research and Analytical Service Cores (RASC), Showcase Scheduled for October 3

    Sep 23, 2025

The CFAES Office for Research and Graduate Education is proud to announce the official launch of the CFAES Research and Analytical Service Cores (RASC)—a newly organized network of research support units formed from the former MCIC and STAR Lab resources. This strategic reorganization aims to enhance research capabilities and collaboration across all CFAES campuses.

The RASC initiative brings together four centrally supported service cores, each offering specialized expertise and infrastructure:

  3. MCIC hosted a PacBio Seminar

    Mar 12, 2025

On February 18, 2025, MCIC hosted a PacBio Lunch & Learn Seminar, with around 40 in-person and 10 virtual attendees. The event highlighted HiFi long-read sequencing and its applications in genomics, transcriptomics, and metagenomics.

Presenters Turner Duncan and Patrick Backman from PacBio covered topics like whole genome sequencing, RNA sequencing, and methylation detection, showcasing the Revio and Vega systems for high-accuracy, long-read data.
